UPS Load Shedding Strategy
Q: What is UPS load shedding and how can I lengthen battery backup time?
A: Most loads connected to a UPS need clean power and protection from outages, but not all of them must keep running through a power failure. Some can be shut down in a controlled way to preserve battery for the loads that do need to keep running. This is “UPS load shedding” — distinct from grid-scale load shedding.
Riello provides two software paths:
- PowerShield and Watch and Save — free Riello software that triggers orderly shutdown of selected hosts under power-failure conditions
- A UPS network interface or SNMP card (NetMan 204) — optional on purchase or retrofit, exposes the same shutdown signalling over the network for orchestration
The result is non-critical loads drop early in the outage, leaving more battery runtime for the inverter loads that must run continuously.
