IEA Emergency Reserves Release

On March 11, 2026, all 32 International Energy Agency member states unanimously agreed to release 400 million barrels of oil from their emergency strategic reserves — representing approximately four days of global consumption — in response to the Strait of Hormuz crisis. This was one of the largest coordinated strategic reserve releases in IEA history. The US also temporarily suspended its embargo of Russian oil for 30 Russia-connected petroleum tankers carrying 19 million barrels of oil in Asia, in an effort to moderate prices.
