Operation Poseidon
Operation Poseidon is the European Union joint naval escort mission launched during the 2026 Strait of Hormuz crisis, led by France and the United Kingdom with participation from Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. Its mandate was the protection of non-combatant commercial vessels in the northern Gulf and Gulf of Oman. The EU explicitly framed Operation Poseidon as a freedom-of-navigation mission distinct from the US Naval Blockade of Iranian ports, allowing member states to participate without formally endorsing US coercive measures against Iran.
