Open questions — emollient-therapy (round 0)
- What is the optimal frequency and quantity of emollient for a 1–4-year-old? NICE’s 250–500 g/week is based on expert consensus, and the BEE investigators say their findings “challenge conventions about how often moisturisers need to be applied”.
- Do emollients increase skin infection risk in toddlers who already have eczema (as seen in infant prevention trials: BEEP IRR 1.55; Cochrane 2022 RR 1.33), or only in healthy infants?
- Do emollients with added ingredients (ceramides, urea, colloidal oatmeal, antiseptics) give any real benefit over simple emollients for under-5s, given the higher adverse-event rates for urea and oat in Cochrane 2017?
