National Health Insurance Act
South Africa’s National Health Insurance (NHI) Act is healthcare financing legislation signed in 2023 that proposes to establish a single national health insurance fund. Healthcare workers and private sector medical professionals have expressed significant concern about NHI implementation — particularly around reduced private practice viability, reimbursement rates, and government employment conditions. A Solidarity report found 1 in 5 SA healthcare workers have already taken steps to emigrate, and 41% would consider doing so when NHI is implemented, making NHI milestones a high-salience trigger for the Work Abroad Pathway Intelligence product’s healthcare professional audience.
