Anticimex SMART Technology
Anticimex SMART is a proprietary IoT-based pest monitoring and control system developed by Anticimex at its Anticimex Innovation Center. The system consists of: (1) network-connected sensors that detect pest activity (primarily rodents); (2) non-toxic traps (100% toxin-free) that respond to pest detection; and (3) a central SMART reporting platform that aggregates data from all installed devices. Devices communicate via GSM mobile networks or radio waves and report to the Anticimex SMART reporting system, enabling real-time monitoring and instant response notifications.
Scale trajectory: The platform deployed 148,000 devices across 18 markets as of February 2020, generating approximately 9% of Anticimex total revenue. By early 2025, the installed base had grown to approximately 525,000 devices, contributing an estimated 14% of Anticimex revenue and growing at over 25% annually. This trajectory means SMART technology is on a path to represent approximately 20–25% of Anticimex revenue within 3–5 years — a fundamental shift in business model from service-delivery-only to data-driven monitoring-as-a-service.
Proprietary restriction: Anticimex SMART is exclusively available to Anticimex platform companies (its acquired subsidiaries). This has two implications for a South African roll-up: (1) any acquired SA platform company that enters an Anticimex portfolio via exit pathway would gain access to SMART technology, creating a post-acquisition value layer; (2) conversely, no independent SA competitor can access SMART — making the technology a proprietary moat that any Anticimex-affiliated buyer would deploy as a competitive weapon.
Model relevance for SA: South Africa’s pest control market is entirely inspection-based — monthly or quarterly physical visits are the norm. No SA operator of any tier currently deploys an IoT-enabled monitoring platform at scale. A roll-up that introduces even a scaled-down digital monitoring capability (using either locally developed or licensed IoT technology) would achieve the same competitive differentiation in SA that SMART created for Anticimex globally: shift from reactive treatment to predictive prevention, reducing chemical use, improving client stickiness, and justifying premium pricing for a continuously monitored service versus an inspection-visit model.
