Domestic Workers
South Africa has an estimated 1.1–1.3 million domestic workers, constituting one of the largest employment categories in the country. Despite providing essential household services, domestic workers are among the most economically vulnerable employees — earning a minimum wage of R28.79 per hour (2025) and historically denied standard labour protections. They work in private homes, often alone or with limited oversight, in an environment where they may be present during a home invasion, robbery, or physical assault with no means of discreetly summoning help.
The voice distress trigger is particularly suited to this segment: a domestic worker who senses danger during a break-in can speak a pre-configured phrase while appearing to the intruder to be speaking normally on the phone, dispatching response without the intruder being alerted. The manual panic button alternative requires deliberate, visible interaction with a phone screen — potentially escalating the threat.
The employer-funded distribution model is the most commercially viable path for this segment. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, South African employers have a duty of care for domestic worker safety. Providing a voice distress app as part of the employment package is a defensible duty-of-care measure — similar to how vehicle tracking companies have framed GPS-enabled panic for delivery drivers. An employer paying R50–R100/month per domestic worker employee at scale represents attractive B2B unit economics.
MySOS’s product listing explicitly mentions domestic worker safety as a use case, confirming that the segment is recognised by competitors as commercially relevant.
