Elderly and Assisted Living
South African elderly individuals are a high-urgency, medium-ability-to-pay customer segment. They face two distinct threat categories: crime (elderly people living alone are frequently targeted in home invasions) and medical emergencies (falls and cardiac events require rapid response but may leave the victim unable to physically operate a device).
The voice activation mechanism addresses both threats: in a crime scenario, the user can speak the trigger phrase without alerting an intruder; in a medical scenario (fall, collapse), the user may be able to speak even when they cannot reach a phone or press a button. This creates a genuinely additive safety capability over wearable physical panic buttons that require a button press.
MySOS explicitly markets to the elderly segment, mentioning “assisted living” and “elderly residents” in its product materials. Medi Response’s “Assist Me” product (wearable panic button with two-way voice) is the primary wearable competitor in this segment.
The key challenge with voice activation for elderly users is false trigger management: many elderly people have TVs running throughout the day, and a TV programme uttering a phrase similar to the trigger word would dispatch armed response unnecessarily. The custom phrase selection feature is important for this segment — phrases unlikely to appear on South African television (in any language) should be recommended.
The adult-children-as-buyer channel is distinctive: the product may be sold to, configured by, and paid for by adult children rather than the elderly user themselves. Marketing to this buyer persona requires different messaging (peace of mind, family safety net) from the direct user messaging.
