BYY Strategic Services is the South African company behind Valor, described as the world’s first patented voice-activated panic super app. The company is entirely women-owned and managed, led by CEO Amanda Rogaly. BYY filed the Valor patent in South Africa and internationally in 2023, and launched the Valor app commercially in South Africa in April 2025.
The company’s core innovation is a patented voice recognition process that allows users to trigger emergency response via a custom spoken phrase without manually interacting with their phone. BYY has partnered with what it describes as the largest emergency control room in South Africa to provide the response infrastructure, and has also integrated banking fraud notification functionality into the app. The pricing model of R199 per month per family positions BYY in the consumer subscription safety market.
As the first mover in voice-activated distress apps in South Africa, BYY Strategic Services is both the primary direct competitor and a proof-of-concept that the market will support this product category. The company’s patent claims, if substantive, could represent an intellectual property barrier to entry for new entrants in the SA market.
