Information Regulator South Africa

The Information Regulator is South Africa’s constitutionally independent authority responsible for enforcing the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA). Established under POPIA, the Regulator has moved into active enforcement mode since 2024, issuing infringement notices and imposing penalties of up to R10 million on non-compliant organisations.

Any app processing personal information of South African users — including audio recordings, location data, and biometric data — falls under Information Regulator jurisdiction. The Regulator requires organisations to appoint and register an Information Officer and maintains a complaints mechanism for data subjects.
