Temporary Roadworks Sign
Temporary (roadworks) signs are yellow diamonds — the yellow background, not the symbol, is the key: it marks the sign as temporary and overriding. This is why permanent warning signs (red-bordered triangles) must not be called ‘yellow diamonds’. See Road Sign Colour Code and the Stop Go Sign.
Meaning
A temporary hazard or roadworks is ahead; a yellow sign overrides the permanent signs.
Required driver response
Slow down, increase your following distance, and obey any temporary controls.
Question patterns
- “What does this sign mean?” — recognition of meaning.
- “What must you do when you see it?” — required response.
- Distractor trap: not registering that yellow means temporary and outranks permanent white signs.
