Perplexity AI is an AI-powered search and answer engine. PayPal Holdings has partnered with Perplexity to enable product purchases directly within Perplexity’s chat interface — one of the first live implementations of PayPal’s agentic commerce strategy. Live merchant integrations include Abercrombie & Fitch and Ashley Furniture. Separately, a “Pay with Venmo” integration within Perplexity’s AI search interface has been announced under new CEO Enrique Lores.
The Perplexity partnership is PayPal Holdings’ most concrete public proof-of-concept for the hypothesis that AI conversational interfaces will become a significant checkout channel. By embedding PayPal/Venmo as the payment layer within AI search queries that lead to purchase intent, PayPal aims to capture TPV from a channel where traditional checkout button presence is irrelevant — positioning that neither Apple Pay nor Shop Pay have prioritised at the same speed.
