AURA

AURA is South Africa’s leading emergency response API platform, operating on a B2B2C model that has made it the backbone of multiple major consumer safety products. Founded by Warren Myers, AURA serves over one million monthly active users in South Africa. The company reports an average response time of under 10 minutes in South Africa (best-case times as low as 3 minutes in high-density urban areas), with a network of over 3,000 security vehicles nationwide. AURA estimates 5 lives saved per day across its network.

AURA’s core innovation is the commoditisation of emergency dispatch through an API layer. Rather than requiring consumers to adopt a new app, AURA embeds its dispatch capability inside products that consumers already use — Uber, Discovery Health, FNB banking app, Samsung devices, OUTsurance, and Tracker CareGuard among them. When any of these platforms triggers an alert (via button press, telematics anomaly, or in-app panic), AURA’s backend locates the nearest vetted, PSIRA-registered responder and dispatches them. The 24/7 central control room monitors all call-outs. Responders use locked Android devices running AURA’s software, enabling machine-to-machine communication and live GPS tracking.

For a voice distress app, AURA represents the most commercially mature and technically accessible control room integration path in South Africa. The public API, sandbox environment, Slack support channel, and existing case studies from Uber and Samsung remove much of the partnership development friction that would otherwise represent a barrier to entry. A voice distress app would add a novel trigger mechanism (voice phrase detection) on top of AURA’s dispatch infrastructure, rather than having to build or negotiate its own control room. The B2B2C model also enables distribution through AURA’s existing insurer and bank partnerships — a channel that a standalone safety app startup would take years to develop.

AURA’s response network includes Fidelity ADT, CSI, and Axon, giving it coverage from South Africa’s largest armed response operator.
