Xpresso Franchise Process

Xpresso Café operates an owner-managed franchise model — the franchisee must be a hands-on operator, not a passive investor. This is an explicit FASA-listed requirement and distinguishes the model from passive franchise investment models. The following describes the process from application to operation:

Application: Prospective franchisees complete a formal application form. The company states it only assists parties who have submitted the form (due to high inquiry volume). Requirements: age 18+, no criminal record, sufficient unencumbered capital.

Setup: The store is fully furnished and fitted by the franchisor — a turnkey, ready-to-open operation. Franchisees do not manage construction or fit-out. Typical build/setup time implied is 6–12 weeks (based on third-party sources). The setup cost of R1.1M–R1.3M (excl. VAT) covers all of this. An independent estimate of real-world store value emerged from the 2025 competition, which advertised the prize as “a fully operational Xpresso Café store valued at R1.5 million.”

Training: 2 weeks in-house (at nearest Xpresso store or at franchise location), covering POS, kitchen/menu, customer service, and key financial controls. Conducted by the Xpresso management/operations team. After training, franchisees open with a trained staff team provided by the franchisor.

Ongoing: Franchisees receive support from a dedicated franchise manager. Marketing and advertising are handled centrally. All menu prices are set by the franchisor (R14 flat); franchisees cannot independently adjust pricing. Product supply comes from Jackass Roastery (coffee) and the Cape Town food factory (baked goods), with potential regional third-party bakery supplements.

Geographic expansion pattern: franchising began 2018 (Western Cape); Durban 2019; Gauteng 2020. As of April 2026, stores are present across Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal, Johannesburg, and Pretoria — with 2026 focus on adding 20 more Gauteng stores.

Multi-unit franchising: The company explicitly offers single- and multi-unit franchise options (FASA). Reportedly “most franchisees reinvest, open multiple stores, and double — even triple — their income within just a few years” (competition page). This claim is unaudited but suggests operational viability.

No bank/government funding support: FASA listing explicitly states no external funding assistance is provided.
