Exam Format — Motorcycle

The learner’s licence theory test for a motorcycle (Code A / A1 / old Code 1) shares the same three-section structure as the car test. The distinguishing feature is the Vehicle Controls section, whose 8 questions are drawn from the motorcycle control set (throttle, clutch lever, front/rear brake, foot gear lever, indicator switch, handlebars).

Verified / claimed structure

  • Total questions: 64 or 68 (same conflict as the car format).
  • Sections and pass marks: Rules 22, Signs 23, Controls 6/8.
  • Vehicle Controls content is motorcycle-specific (study papers Controls 1–4).
  • Computerised or paper depending on centre.

Conflicting claims

  • Same 64-vs-68 / 28-vs-30 conflict as Exam Format — Light Motor Vehicle.
  • Minimum age also disputed: gov.za says 16 (≤125 cc) / 18 (>125 cc); Wikipedia says 17 for an unrestricted motorcycle. Trust the government figure (18).

Research note

Treat public practice-test formats as practice formats unless confirmed by official or provincial transport sources. No government source publishes question counts, pass marks or a time limit — these figures originate entirely with commercial driving-school sites and are tagged alleged. This wiki does not claim to reproduce the official restricted question bank.
