Headlights

Headlights illuminate the road and make the vehicle visible. Beam discipline (dip for oncoming/leading traffic) is governed by the Vehicle Lights rule. The bright/dim distinction is tested under Rules of the Road, not Section 3, so this control is tagged alleged.

Evidence note: Tested under Rules of the Road, not the official Section 3 controls list. evidence_strength: alleged.

Purpose

Illuminate the road ahead; bright beam for open road, dipped for meeting/following traffic.

When used

At night and in poor visibility; dip for oncoming traffic and when following closely.

Risks of incorrect use

  • Bright beam blinds oncoming drivers
  • Driving on parking lights only reduces visibility

Question patterns

  • “Which control performs function X?” — component identification.
  • Distractor trap: Keeping bright (main) beam on when meeting oncoming traffic.
