ABS

Anti-lock braking (ABS) preserves steering during emergency braking with the Foot Brake. The driver should hold firm pressure, not pump. It is not in the official Section 3 list, so it is tagged alleged.

Evidence note: Tested under Rules of the Road, not the official Section 3 controls list. evidence_strength: alleged.

Purpose

Prevents wheel lock-up under heavy braking so the driver keeps steering control.

When used

Activates automatically during hard or emergency braking; keep firm pedal pressure.

Risks of incorrect use

  • Pumping the pedal defeats it
  • Can lengthen stopping on loose gravel or snow

Question patterns

  • “Which control performs function X?” — component identification.
  • Distractor trap: Thinking ABS always shortens stopping distance, or that you should pump the brake.
