Foot Brake

The foot (service) brake (control 9) is the correct control for stopping, including emergencies — not the Handbrake, which only keeps the vehicle stationary. On a motorcycle, stopping uses the front brake lever and rear brake pedal in combination. Stopping distance lengthens on wet roads, at speed and when loaded; the ABS helps preserve steering during hard braking.

Evidence note: Official NaTIS Section 3 numbered control. evidence_strength: confirmed.

Purpose

Slows or stops the vehicle (service brake).

When used

To decrease speed or stop, including emergency stops.

Risks of incorrect use

  • Longer stopping distance on wet roads, at higher speed and when loaded
  • Wheel lock-up and skidding without ABS

Question patterns

  • “Which control performs function X?” — component identification.
  • Distractor trap: Choosing the handbrake for an emergency stop instead of the foot brake.
