Brake Lights
The brake (stop) lights illuminate automatically when you press the service Foot Brake, warning the drivers behind you that you are slowing or stopping. On a motorcycle the front brake lever also activates the stop lamp, in addition to the rear brake. Keeping them working is a roadworthiness requirement — see Driver Documents and Roadworthiness.
Purpose
Warn following drivers that you are slowing down or stopping.
When used
Triggered automatically whenever the service (foot) brake is applied; the motorcycle front brake lever also activates the stop lamp.
Risks of incorrect use
- A faulty or broken brake light gives following drivers no warning, a leading cause of rear-end collisions.
Question patterns
- “Which lights warn the drivers behind you when you brake?” — component identification.
- Distractor trap: confusing brake lights with headlights or hazard lights.
