Indicators
The direction indicators (control 5; motorcycle control 6) communicate intention before a manoeuvre. They signal but do not change direction — that is the Steering Wheel. Operationally tied to the Turning and Signals rule.
Evidence note: Official NaTIS Section 3 numbered control.
evidence_strength: confirmed.
Purpose
Communicate the intention to turn or change direction/lane to other road users.
When used
Before (not during) turning, changing lane or changing direction.
Risks of incorrect use
- Other road users misjudge your intention
- Failing to cancel misleads others
Question patterns
- “Which control performs function X?” — component identification.
- Distractor trap: Confusing ‘signal intention to turn’ (indicator) with ‘change direction’ (steering).
