Steering Wheel

The steering wheel (official control 4 on the light/heavy layout) is the primary directional control. On a motorcycle the equivalent is the handlebars (control 8). The manual distinguishes ‘change direction’ (steering) from ‘advise others of intention to turn’ (the Indicators).

Evidence note: Official NaTIS Section 3 numbered control. evidence_strength: confirmed.

Purpose

Changes the direction of the vehicle.

When used

Held in normal driving; turned before and during a change of direction.

Risks of incorrect use

  • Loss of directional control
  • Oversteer or understeer
  • Leaving the lane

Question patterns

  • “Which control performs function X?” — component identification.
  • Distractor trap: Confusing it with the indicator — steering changes direction; the indicator only signals the intention.
