Clutch

The clutch (control 8) disconnects engine from gearbox so gears can be changed with the Gear Lever. The official manual explicitly notes that automatic vehicles do not have a clutch. On a motorcycle the clutch is a hand lever (control 2).

Evidence note: Official NaTIS Section 3 numbered control. evidence_strength: confirmed.

Purpose

Engages and disengages the engine from the gearbox to allow gear changes.

When used

Pressed when changing gear and just before stopping to prevent stalling.

Risks of incorrect use

  • Stalling
  • Gearbox grinding
  • Clutch wear from riding it
  • Rollback on a hill

Question patterns

  • “Which control performs function X?” — component identification.
  • Distractor trap: Thinking an automatic vehicle has a clutch — the manual states automatics have no clutch control.
