Gear Lever

The gear lever (control 6) selects the gear ratio; on a manual, changing gear requires both the gear lever and the Clutch. An automatic gear lever operates differently from a manual gearbox. The motorcycle gear lever (control 1) is foot-operated.

Evidence note: Official NaTIS Section 3 numbered control. evidence_strength: confirmed.

Purpose

Selects the gear ratio.

When used

To select or change gears (with the clutch on a manual).

Risks of incorrect use

  • Wrong gear for the speed
  • Stalling
  • Loss of engine braking
  • Rollback

Question patterns

  • “Which control performs function X?” — component identification.
  • Distractor trap: Selecting the gear lever alone to change gear without using the clutch.
